SUGGESTIONS

Few things I will suggest (but you have to make the final call since it is your cash)

1) read. read. read. (ok, thats really 3 suggestions in one). Start with places like http://www.tomshardware.com and read reviews, look at pics of what others have done for ideas on cooling and mods.

2) Personally I like AMD. Intel blows and Only way I would take one is if it was free (eg. system at work).

3) Case: always think about tempature and cooling. The bigger the case the more room there is for cooling. The Lian Li cases are top notch, never heard a single complaint from anyone, they also cost a lot. Stick with metal cases, avoid the plastic crap like Dell and Compaq use on some systems. screw the hydraulic cases, I have read toooo many ppl having problems with them. Looks nice - works bad

4) mobo: I have had nothing but good luck with the IWill kk266. Somebody will say it sucks, but then I hate Asus due to past Asus mobo's I have had. Read reviews, visit http://www1.amd.com/athlon/mbl and find AMD approved mobo, compare them to what different reviews say.

5) Stick with IDE. SCSI rocks but is high $$ and runs hot. Also, if you don't have any exp then SCSI is a lil harder to setup.

What I am building:
Antec SX1030
Enermax 431W Whisper psu (using the 300w Antec psu for cooling only)
IWill KK266 (avoided the -R option)
AMD 1.333ghz
GlobalWinFOP38 hsf (saving my pennies for the Swiftech MC462)
1gb ram @ 7.5ns CL2
16x DVD
12x10x24 Plextor burner
Maxtor UDMA100 Controller card
40GB UDMA100 Segate
40GB UDMA100 Quantom
SBLive Orginal 2 slot card
3Com 10/100 busmaster PCI server NIC
DigitalDoc5

It is a live and learn deal. Maybe buy the cheapest case you can find (no psu) and jsut hack it up for practice. Ask questions as you have them. I bet that you get answers, this forum seems pretty good and has a lot of activity so far :)

I suggest you get a friend to help you.

There's only so much a website guide and a few pictures can do.

There's stuff that you WILL need help with. So call a buddy and have him help you out.

Thats the case I got, but the standard beige color. I have bought from big008 in the past. Was no problems with them. Don't wimp on the vid card or sound card. Make sure the vid card cooks (DDR, 6.5ns). Stick with the SBLive X-Gamer as a minimum.

Also, that case only has a 300w psu. If you plan any HEAVY mods you may want to think about a beefier psu.

Sounds like me with my old SoundBlaster Live. I have the orginial 2 slot card. The Plat replaced this card. Only diff is I don't have the pretty display and all my plug ports are on a daughterboard in the back instead of the pretty display up front. Someday I may actually make a case mod to move all of those up front.
