cheap IPS panels?
« on: January 14, 2009, 07:55:38 PM »

i'm looking around for a new LCD, preferably an IPS panel due to good color and viewing angle, but can't afford the >$800 these things tend to be priced at. anyone know of some good cheap ones?

You might look into:

1)  Looking for used monitors or "last one or two" of older models.

2)  Compromising on the (slightly more available) PVA/MVA panels.

I am *SO* glad I got my monitor just before the TN panel flood overwhelmed the 24" range.

The 24" UltraSharp 2408WFP is a PVA Panel:

* EDIT *

Info about panels used in specific models can be found using this search tool:
http://www.flatpanelshd.com/panels.php

It doesn't have everything on it, but it has a good bit on there.

forgot to mention i don't need one now, so i don't mind waiting for sales or new stuff to come out

(i'm wondering if LED backlighting for example will fix a bit of the TN panel's problems)

You do realize that less and less of the screens released these days are IPS and PVA panels, right?  As that happens the price of IPS and PVA panels is going up in general.  Also, the fact that TN panels are 6-bit will never be fixed by backlighting.

Dell is your best bet for IPS.  that said, I've got a TN panel and I don't notice much of a difference between my IPS Dell, and my TN Acer.  What are the advantages again?  I know one of them is viewing angle but since I look at both straight on, that's not much of an advantage.  color accuracy?

Amount of color is not my concern. I am mostly a web developer. I don't care that there are only 6 bits of color, thats what 99.9% of my audience sees anyways. Accuracy of picture I see compared with what other people see when I photoshop is my concern.

What I really hate is that if you aren't looking at the dead center of a TN panel then it will be darker or lighter depending on what part of the screen you look at from what angle. It makes photo corrections a PITA.

Very true about the supply-demand for IPS/PVA though, they haven't been getting any cheaper :( I hadn't thought of that
