Radeon 9600XT Question
« on: April 17, 2004, 06:36:55 PM »

How would you all rate the card listed below

Radeon 9600XT 128MB Video Card, 8x AGP, 128MB DDR

I havent heard much about it. But my Question is will it run 100 FPS & will it run Half life 2 when its released.

The reason im asking this is cause i seen that you can get half life 2 if you buy this card. Just need a Good Video card that will run all the new games that are being released

It is a good mid-range video card.

As to your questions: Will it run 100 FPS?  100FPS in what? FPS = Frames per Second, and that depends on the settings that you are using and what game you are playing.  A card that gets 400 FPS in Quake might get 30FPS in Farcry.

Will it run HL2 when released? Yes, but not at top quality and certainly not at 100FPS.  HL2 has been designed so that you can play it with a video card like a TNT2 16MB by turning all the advanced features off, so basically any card out there will play it, its merely a question of how much quality you'll be getting.

Also, you should be careful, because while all 9600XTs used to come with a HL2 coupon, now many do not.  As far as I know all 9800XTs come with coupons still, but they are much more expensive.  If you are buying a 9600XT because of the coupon, make sure that it says the coupon is included (or call the retailer to check).

Right i Understand. i know alittle about video cards. been out of Play for Awhile & nah not just getting it for the Half life 2 Coupon. Im just trying to find a Nice Reliable CHEAP Video Card that will run all te games at nice Quality & get 100 Frames Per Sec.

Yeah i would love to own a 9800 XT but the Price is just to High for me at this moment. If you have any ideas id like to know.

The card im looking for the most tho is the radeon 9700 Pro 128. I had one for a year or longer and loved it but it hit the crapper. I wanted to buy a new one but just cant find one for a reasonable Price.

If you got any Idea's or whatnot Lemme know any help is appreciated

Not quite sure what you mean by cheap - a Retail 9600XT (non retail ones dont have coupons) is going to cost you $150-160.  If I were you (and if I didnt care about that HL2 coupon, which I don't) I'd save another $50 and get a 9800 Pro 128MB for $210

As for "all the games at nice quality and get 100 frames per second"  I don't know what games you mean.  If you're talking about Counterstrike, yeah, it will play counterstrike at 100FPS.  If you're talking about the newest games (UT2k4, Farcry, etc) or games that are coming out (HL2, Doom3 etc) the answer is no - there is no card currently out for any price that will play those games at 100FPS.

FPS is a relative term, it depends on teh game and the graphics quality.

While you may get a few hundred FPS in quake 3 as bale pointed out, your video card may be struggling to keep up in anothre game.

To put it simply, you get what you pay for. A 150$ video card (like the 9600 pro) will perform like a 150$ video card, a 600$ video card (like the Geforce 6800 Ultra) will perform like a 600$ video.

I'd be guessing at 1280x1024, at a graphics quality of 3/4 (probably high, not highest), and with at least a 2.5ghz processor, and a 9600 pro, you'd get somewhre between 20-30fps in HL2. I know i get around 20fps in far cry right now with a 2ghz processor, a geforce 4 ti4400, at a res of 1024x768 on high.

Again, im not sure, thats just my guess. There is not such thing as good and cheap, because the thing thats more expensive is (almost) always better :P. If it was good, it wouldnt be called cheap :)

100fps in HL2 with a 9600 pro is a joke, unless you turn down the res and the quality, which in return will bring you piss poor graphics, enjoy :)

One last thing, by the time HL2 is out, the next gen (or even next-next-generatation) cards will be out, so your 9600 pro may not quite compare to an 11600 pro, or by the looks of it, a X800 pro by ATIs new naming scheme. For example, the Geforce 6800 Ultra is coming out in early may and has proven to perform double of what the 9800XT does in many situations. The HL2 coupon is a joke IMO, if you want a card specifically for playing HL2, then buy a card when HL2 is out, if not, then a 9800 pro for around 210$ right now is the best buy, as bale pointed out

Radeon 9600XT Question

Yeah i was thinking about that the other day of getting a radeon 9800 pro. My Friend got one & he sais its a really nice Card. I was just wondering about the 9600xt cause another mod/review site gave it a really good Score & so didnt the users who voted for it.

Does the 9800 pro Retail for just a little over 200 bux or is that the price like at Pricewatch or newegg

Im not trying to get a Video Card that supplies you with Half Life 2. the game keeps getting pushed back & back not worried about it just thought it would be a good idea to get the ticket. but i noticed just now that if you get it without the ticket the card is 149 but if you get it with its 200.00

I see your just pretty much paying for the Game anyways so i can wait for that.

I think ill go with the radeon 9800 pro. it got some good Reviews. Yeah I play Counter-Strike i can pull off 100 FPS on any Card i use. The games that i was talking about are like. All Medal of Honor's, Call of Duty &  Splinter Cell.

Im running a Geforce Fx 5600 Xt Ultra 128 MB AGP 8x and all i can get in anygame is 30-50 Frames. I got it for free with my Pc. Like i said i been out of Pc so long that i really didnt keep up with Video Reviews & such. but your Help has been very well worth the time. Thanks for all the Information

I also understand about the frames since i also own Farcry and all i get it like 18 fps on this crap card. im just trying to find a card that will at least run those games pretty well without having to fuss with lagging & skipping & such things.

The 9500 Pro is faster than the 9600 in some tests. Also you CAN mod a 9500 into a 9700.

The 9600 series is a joke. They perform horribly just like the FX5600's and FX5700's. On average they give less than 10FPS more than previous generation midrange cards. Here is a 9800se that can be modded into a 9800. At almost the same price as the 9600XT it is way better. Also, with Newegg's good RMA policy if you don't get a card that can be modded you can always return it and get another one.

The 9800PRO does retail around $210. Also, if you still wanted a 9700Pro, I'd just find a 9800 Non-Pro, they cost about the same, and overclock it.

For $200 from new egg you can't go wrong with 9800PRO. One personn posted a review of the powercooler or Saphire 9800SE but instead new egg sent the buyer a 9800PRO. If that story is true then that person saved $50-75 bones. Sometime things get screwed up and you benefit from it.
