your opinon on which cpu and gpu cooler to use
« on: January 09, 2003, 03:35:03 AM »

I was looking into upgrading my AMD XP 1800+ cooler and my Asus GeForce 4 TI4200 cooler and was wondering what opinons you guys in the forums had(being that you've made a choice like this before, and I like to see what others think about this idea)-side note I'm using all the stock settings, I'm not much into overclocking at this poing-.
For my AMD cooler I was thinking of TermalTake's Volcano 9 and for my GeForce 4 I was thinking of ThermalTake's Geforce 4 chipset cooler .         Now I haven't purchased anything yet (have to save up for it), but I do wanna know what your guys/galls opinons are of these coolers and/or ideas for others.

thanks for your time

Try researching the Thermalright SK-7. It is an all copper socket A heatsink and has excellent performance at a reasonable price. It can use 80mm fans with its retention wires. Its clip uses all 3 notches instead of just one. Although it is harder than most to install. Most people find they have to push down hard with a screw driver. You're smart and I'm sure you can find reviews on it.

I have a volcano9 on my xp1600 now, it's running with the temp sensor and keeps it around 40c no load, around 48c running rc5-72 all the time. but it only ever hits around 4000rpm, if I put it on highest setting, it could probably keep it down around 40c under load, but it's too loud for my liking at that point.

I found that buying the 2 80MM fan PCI slot cooler helps your video card a lot. They cost about $10 and they put out about 60cfm..this helps cool the chip by giving it more air for the chip fan to use and by cooling the ram...I would suggest getting that..

I only use Alpha's.  I went through the factory, dragon orb for P4 478 and finally the Alpha, and I love it.  Temps are about the same for the alpha and the Orb, but the alpha is a hellova lot quieter.  I liked it so much I already have the AMD equivilent for my new XP2400 coming in next week.
