Well if you set up a nice rig with watercooling or something you can get some decent extra mhz, then if you want to upgrade you can just stuff in a new board and cpu and then overclock that one too.  The initial cost and effort is high, but after that it's free speed with each generation.

there is something special about the stability of naturally aspirated hsf's. besides i would be really really mad if a seal blew and all the water ruined the carpeting, the cpu over heated and melted it with the socket, then there would be the electrical short, which led to the overload of the circuit which lead to a city wide black out that backfeed to the nuclear plant out here and badda boom.............  all this for 10% more mhz. nice ROI

naturally aspirated...never thought i would see that with computers.  hmm...force induction on a HSF.  slap a sneaky peek 5shot of nos on ur HSF.  When you see them temps rise shoot...lol

just be careful, you dont want detonation.
:D

sorry...just had to...hehe

i'd have to agree with the fact that overclocking most things now days is done for the simple enjoyment of it. and bragging rights, of course, if someone can post their cely 600 at 1.2 ghz, they would then in turn earn a lot of respect. me, because i am dang near broke, oc to save money. so yes, there are those of use to oc to save money. i've got a 35 dollar duron 750 at 1ghz that outperforms the 1ghz athlon on the SisSandra benchmarks. not by much, but it does. saving that 50 bucks does matter, especially when you dump so much $$ into your computer you barely make rent.

I OC, have for years, and while you wont notice a performance gain in most programs there are a few that ya do. Such as distributed computer programs like

Genome@Home (mapping protiens to find cures)
Seti@Home (duh!, to find ET)
Folding@Home (dunno, never ran that one)

I'm currently running a 1.2 Athlon @ 1.5 stable. I noticed a big increase when it came to the number of protiens my computer was helping build.
And of course, its always fun to do, and yea, fun to brag :D

btw, hello all *newbie waves to all
