120mm cpu fan. good idea or bad idea?
« on: November 03, 2002, 11:21:00 AM »

im sure weve all seen the 60mm to 80mm heatsink fan adapters, and im sure weve all seen the 80mm to 120mm adapters as well... im thinking of putting an 80mm adapter on my heatsink, adn then throwing a 120mm adapter on top of that. im guessing that itll give me some sweet temps with little or no noise. has anybody tried this before? will it work? if youve seen it done on line can you post a link?

The only thing to worry about there is the weight of the fan.  You might have your heatsink just snap off of the lugs.  I think the safe weights are 350 g or less for a one-lug clip and 500g or less for a three-lug clip.

With the 2 adapters stacked, the fan should be close enough to the side panel to be mounted there.  That would alleviate the stress on the lugs, and provide a source of fresh, cool air for the CPU.
Nice idea, need I say we want pics if you do it?  :)

i thought about mounting it inside the side window (very easy to do) but that would mean that id end up taking off my fan every time i open my case. ill probably just make a vent right next to the fan, as to the weight... has anybody ever noticed that right above where the cpu is mounted on the newer antec cases, here is a little bar that runs from side to side i think its there to strengthen the structure. if you look at it closely, there is a threaded hole that a mobo mounting screw will fit in. i have no idea why that hole is there, but im thinking of making a small support off of that. my girlfriend is hooking up her webcam soon, ill start posting pics of all these weird ideas and stuff soon.

There are people on other forums that have tried this, some have got good and some bad results.  Why no put a 120mm on the side panel and a normal 60 or 80 mm on the HS and duct it to the 120mm... I bet that'd do just as well if not better.  Just make a cardboard duct!
