I know it said in the article that it was not meant for metal, but I'm wondering if anybody has tried, and what their experience was like...

Q: Can vinyl dye be used on metal?

A: Its not supposed to be, and I really can't recommend using it on metal. I have seen people who used it on metal and have had good luck with it. Try it on a small piece and see if it works for you.

Translation: It didnt work for me and just about everybody else, however it has worked for a couple of other people.  Its hit and miss, usually miss.  Try it for yourself.

First of all thanks alot to Merlinicorpus.
I have alwasy been wondering about vinyl dye and your  how-to really helped alot. I do have a couple of questions..

1.) Most peopel I see are dying beige or white to a darker color... Is it possible to dye dark grey or black toa  lighter color such as Xbox green?

2.) When the vinyl dye absorbs into the plastic is there a noticeable amount of seepage... ie does it spread kina like when you hold a marker to a piece of paper...

3.) Last but not least is is possible to blend vinyl dyes and get a kind of gradient style look? I have the artistic talent and a steady enough hand to do it and I was wanting to but the fully 3D looking xbox on my case with dye.

Appreciate your help.

You should be able to lighten up dark plastics with white dye. I haven't tried it, but i hear it works good.

1) Use a white dye to lighten it up, and then apply the color dye.

2) I have never had to tape anything off, so Im not for certain.  Try it and let us know.

3) Again, never did it myself, but I dont know why it wouldn't work.  Im guessing that it would work even better than spray paint.

Nice guide you have there guys.  But I think it needs more pics.  How about a cross-section of a piece of plastic dyed with vinyl dye to show how much seepage occurs, that is if it's that noticeable anyway.
About what Solarwire said, does it bleed?  I mean can you mask a straight portion with some tape for example, dye the surface and still keep a straight colored edge?

Nice guide guys, I read the article last night, and this morning I went I bought some of that sprays, I will post pictures when me done. Its not glossy, it looks just like the regular "plain" like it came with, just a diffent color, this stuff is alsome. There is absolutly no way you, unless you are mental retard and dont know how to paint ;)

Im a mental retard. I went looking for that spray in my color case (popular Antec/Chieftec DX-01Blue) and couldnt find a match after 5 different stores. I finally gave up and bought some Plasti-Kote paint that said it could be used on plastic. Well it worked alright after running all over the place. It looks like sh*t. Is it possible to undo this disaster and start over? What color was that used in the article? I dont they even carry a color to match my case.
