"Flower" type heatsinks...do they make a difference?
« on: November 01, 2002, 12:36:00 PM »

I've recently seen a few of these "flower" type heatsinks for sale and they interest me.  I think that they would disipate heat better than your standard heatsink becuase:
a) They appear to have more surface area and
b) You can put any size fan over them

So does anybody know anything about them.  Have any theories?  I think they would cool better than standard heatsinks, does anyone agree?

Click here to see what i'm talking about.

Ah...the Zalman heatsinks....

My buddy has one, but last time I heard from him, he took it out and put a Swiftec or Alpha heatsink on.  I don't know if he just didn't like it, or what.

It looks unique, but my only gripe would be with the fan placement/bracket.

I tried some, sent the rest back, didn't like them. The fan bracket is a pain in some cases and as for the cooling no gains over a good HSF. Plus is you have a window in your case the bracket and fan don't look good.

I plan to buy one of these myself.  The only thing that worries me is that the heat sink exceeds the max weight limit recomended by AMD.

I read an article on some guy that sent 2 PC's out to his relatives and one of the Zalmans crushed the processor in transit.

But of coarse that shouldnt stop you from buying one.  If your system is stationed for home use only, it shouldnt be a problem.  Probably not a good solution for a LAN rig or people who go mobile with their PC a lot.

dawgytreat, don't waste your money. This come from one that knows his cooling and computers for 13 years and has tried this cooler(12 of them, replaced 10). But if you must it is your money.
