Converting 3 pin fan connector
« on: August 04, 2001, 02:59:00 PM »

Anyone seperated the RPM wire out of the 3pin molex connector for mobo hookup?

I read a www page that said just yanking that one wire out and putting it into a second molex would do the trick.

So, 1 3pin molex would by RPM only and 1 3pin molex was power only, both connectors on one fan..

wouldn't it be easier if you baught a 3 to 4 pin addapter with monitoring, so you get power from the psu (thus not burning out a fan header) and getting monitoring abilites from the motherboard... sounds like a better idea to me...

Thats what I was thinking of basically. Did not know if one was made so was trying to figure out how to make one myself. I'll have to hunt more trying to find them. Since I need 6 of these adaptors (maybe 8) if the price is right that would be easier.

Since I was on the phone for 3hrs last night (helping mom get her DSL working yet again) I tried playing with my fans some.

I yanked the black/red out of the 3 pin connectors, of 2 fans, and put them into 2 molex male connectors (2 reds, 2 blacks - duh). Wired up a 4 pin male molex added a lil heatshrink and 15min later - poof!

2 - 2.4w fans powered straight off the psu with RPM monitoring from the mobo. Motherboard Monitor reported the RPMs of the 2 new fans like a champ.
