FAQ for first time case modders
« Reply #31 on: July 24, 2002, 08:18:00 AM »

Hi guys. I'm new here so i hope you wont mind me asking a few questions before I started to tinker with my pc.

Q.Whats the normal operating temp of the pc?  My system reaches up to 78 degree celcius and my friends told me its quite high.

Q.What are the ways of lowering the temp?

How did you get that temp measurement?  if you want to monitor your PC's temps, you'd have to look at two temps, CPU temp and ambient/case temp.  If your mobo has hardware monitoring (seen in BIOS), you can see there your CPU and ambient temp.  good CPU temps average around 40-60 degrees C.  Your aim is to get within 30-50 degrees C.  Your ambient temps should always be less than the CPU temp.

initial ways to lower your temps:
- Create good case airflow.  Study how your case is setup and see how you can install extra intake and exhaust fans.  There are a lot of threads here that talked about good airflow and you can see much with diagrams and tips concerning the kind of fans to use, amount of CFM, etc.  I see that you're from the Philippines, you'd have to really make your case cool.
- Your CPU must have a decent cooler.  read about CPU cooler reviews and shootouts so you can pick a cooler that suits your needs.  I'm not sure though if the coolers are available there (Greenhills maybe?).
- Clean up cable clutter.  This helps good airflow.

other than that, you can go extreme and setup a watercooling rig.  Hope that helps.

I installed MSI PC Alert which indicates the CPU/chasis temp.  There's a recently opened shop for pc mods in greenhills (wonder how you know about it, you a fil?)and their prices are quite competitive with the online shops.  I just had my case modded with clear cut window and i plan to put exhaust and intake fans but don't know how to maximize thier capacities as to lower my system's temp. I know it's somewhere in this board, but i'm kinda new in using msg boards so i don't really know how to get around collecting info.

Just browse around the forums.  You'll probably see more info about case cooling in the Cooling Etc. forums.
