Vinyl dye question
« on: May 06, 2010, 01:12:50 PM »

Hi all, been a long time, glad to see this place is still alive and kicking.

I recently bought a cheap HD camcorder and works pretty well, but it only came in one color: blue. Nothing against blue but since all my other electronics are black I was thinking about trying to vinyl dye it.

I've worked with the stuff on things like keyboards and mice, but this plastic has a fairly shiny finish (clear coat?) and I wasn't sure how effective it would be. I was wondering if it would have to be sanded before applying.

Attached are a couple of pics that I'm hoping will show what the finish is like.

Thanks!

Nothing wrong with that, I like the color.  It's been my experience that a finish like that won't get along with dyes.  I have an external hd enclosure that had a nice shiny white finish, and I wanted to dye it to match the rest of my pc.  I cleaned it well with lacquer thinner which also took the shine off, and then sprayed it per the directions.  The finish looked good until I touched it, when it proceeded to peel right off.  It's still usable,  but looks like hell.  If I were you I would live with it the way it is.  Of course, you may have better results, and if so, let us know.  Good luck!

I would leave it as it is right now.

That looks like a painted plastic, and that the dye isn't going to be able to adhere very well.  Of course you never know until you try.

Thanks for the replies all, think I'll be keeping it as-is. Could be worse, I suppose ;)
