Card reader hangs boot SOMETIMES
« on: June 22, 2009, 10:23:03 PM »

So I recently updated the BIOS on my Gigabyte MA790X-UD4 to F3.

Then my system stopped booting.  It would boot under the following conditions:

* If you put a card in the internal USB card reader.   :wtf:

* If you had tried to boot once, and told it to try again from the "Windows failed to boot" screen.  :wtf: :wtf:

Otherwise, it tends to hang on an early frame of the Vista boot screen -- when you can just barely read "(C) Microsoft Corporation" and before the little bar displays.

I figured "maybe the card reader is finally kaput", knowing it was unreliable from day 1.  Without the reader, all is well.

So I blew 15 bucks on a new one.  Same problem.  Evidently, it's not finicky what card you use-- a 96M CF card or a 2G MicroSD or a 128M SD all work.

Anyone ever seen such behaviour?

Is it high on your boot priority for some reason?

No, it's not even on there to my knowledge (I think it's hard disc-CD-LS120)

The thing is, it makes the handoff to Vista, because we can see the Microsoft copyright line.  Even when it works, it's prone to a 1 or 2 second stall at that point now.

But  it never happened prior to updated BIOS.

Then flash back to the older BIOS if you can.

Well, on the older BIOS, it did the same thing.

It dawns on me:

1)  Have I ever booted the system without a card in the reader?  Probably.

2)  Perhaps it's a Vista thing-- since it does successfully transfer control, maybe it's barfing about "Hey, I expect a card there and it's not".

Next step:  Reinstall
Followup step:  Live with my old 96M CF card stuck in forever.

Edit:  Reinstall, same problem.

However, what I learned is that it's not a hard freeze, it's rather a stall-out.  If you spend a minute or two waiting, it picks up and boots normally.  Still, it's dramatic and wrong.
