Winamp plugins
« on: May 31, 2009, 09:38:06 AM »

Has anyone had any experiance with winamp plugins? I need to create something that can send now playing info in raw ascii via rs232. I have the sending part figured out but I dont know how to work with winamp. their documentation is really iffy for the sdk.

While I have no experience with making Winamp plugins, I just wanted to say that I abandoned Winamp long ago due to sketchy Vista support, constant crashes, advertisements, and more. I now use Songbird, which is open source, cross platform, and has plugin and skin support. Since its open source and developer friendly, you may want to give it a try.

Alternately, you may want to try Amarok http://amarok.kde.org/ (also open source, cross platform, and can use scripts)

neat, ill have to give that a try. I was a little apprehensive about using winamp, i stopped using it long ago b/c it was dodgy but it was the first thing i thought of when thinking about plugins.

That said, winamp probably still has a bigger audience than Songbird or Amarok so if you're creating a plugin for public consumption, you might want to get a winamp plugin made still.  if it's just for you, then no problems.
