rca/componet streaming capture device
« on: March 19, 2008, 08:01:16 PM »

Hey I haven't seen any of my friends do this yet so I thought I would turn to gideontech. I want to play my old hacked xbox, and my wii through my computer into my monitor. I would prefer an internal card but any good converter box you know of would be helpful. The main thing is i need component high def inputs, and preferably no skipping. I am trying to eliminate my need for a tv and monitor, and dont feel like dropping several grand on a nice new flatsceen tv with rbg and dvi inputs. I already have an HD tuner card but it has no inputs on it. I am running Ubuntu with a 128mb nvidia (sigh, next on my list 1GB Ati). Thanks for the help.

A high def input card/ HD Tuner would do the trick provided you find one that it supported by Ubuntu. However it would not be worth it due to the fact that it will introduce a lag time. The input from the tuner is usually compressed to MPEG2 then decompressed by the video card/software decoder then sent to monitor in an overlay layer (with most software anyway). You could see anywhere between a few milliseconds up to 1-2 seconds depending upon how fast your CPU is. Thats usually fine for most games except Rock band / Guitar hero type games.

I was assuming based upon the fact the mentioned he didn't to buy a new monitor with the required inputs, that his current monitor lacked the ones he needs.
