Meet My EEE PC
« on: January 18, 2008, 07:01:37 PM »

Well, not yet. But I just ordered a black 2gb one. i'm stoaked :D It should arrive soon (yay newegg) and rest assured, there will be mods to it, and I will fill in this project log.

Planned mods!

soon:
-custom case skin (hey, its smaller than a piece of paper, i can plaster the thing with a self printed case sticker easily. for decoration and protection)
-bluetooth
-windows 2000 install (i've heard its possible) sans CD drive
-various linux variants tested
-screen protector (like the mp3 player kind)

someday?
-internal 3g card (i already pay for a data plan on my phone, but i might just use the phone as a 3g modem instead)
-touchscreen
-replacement chasis

if possible
-internal hard drive (2.5" via usb)

BE WARNED: MOD AT YOUR OWN RISK, AND VOID WARRANTIES AT YOUR OWN RISK TOO :P
this is tiny, cramped space. your big, clumsy hands might not be able to handle it. mine barely were.

Oh that's what they're called. I just call them dumb laptops  :D

And yes, you can install Win2K without CD as long as you transfer the directory to the drive (or whatever small storage it's equipped with) and install from there. I've done that in the past cos I didn't use to have reliable CDROMs on older machines.

Evil is what you are...

I want to get one too, a 4G with the web cam.  My girlfriend moved out of country so I want a way to chat on Skype, use a webcam, and be very mobile too.  For $400 it really can't be beat.  I wonder if I can hold out till the 2nd gen (April I hear) when they will come with WiMax also.

i was very tempted to go overboard on purchasing accessories, but then i realized if i did it would be just as (perhaps more) expensive as a normal laptop (though tinier). i want to keep this cheap, so i have (for now) limited myself to what i have lying around (memory cards, usb drives, bluetooth dongles, etc)

ps: as always i have to love newegg. how awesome is newegg? i ordered at like 4pm today and it will be at my doorstep on monday morning :) heck, i might even take the day off of work to play with the new toy! man, i dont know how i ever survived ordering computer parts on the internet before they existed...
edit: yeah, cheap shipping and no rish processing :)

Here's one with almost $500 worth of hacks.

Like someone said in the comments, still cheaper than a Macbook Air ;)
