95C Graphics card HELP!
« on: October 09, 2007, 09:05:09 AM »

Hi guys, i have the 8600GT from gigabyte, it has the silentPipeII passive cooler on it

just realied when playing games, it hit 95 degrees celcius.
This isnt right.  temps were taken from Nvidia monitor.

its about 4 months old
what do you suggest? should i try to re-seat the heatsink?

also, when i load a game, CSS, or GW, or 2142, it seems to make a hissing noise.  then minimise to vista desktop and it stops. open game back up, it hisses agaiin

wonder if the thermal grease is bubbling?

I'd try to reseat the heatsink.  What type of monitor do you have out of curiousity?

i have a 19" widescreen BenQ LCD (1440*900)

full specs:
core2duo e6300
2gb DDR2 667
Antec Earthwats 500w
320gb segate hdd

im wondering about this hiss too. i dunno if its normal or not.

EDIT:
the heatsink gets very hot to touch, so its actually removing the heat from the GPU, would this happen if it wasnt seated correctly?

Seems to be fairly common with passive cooling. I'd suggest getting some more airflow in the case.
The hissing noise is probably not the lithium grease, as it doesn't start to liquefy until close to 200 C.

ok so its down to 45c idle and 60c load, so i'm happy.

I think the hiss is some sort of electrical thing, as it only happens when the card's under load.  Is this 'normal' or is it a faulty electrical component?  I remember my old PSU used to make similar noises, but that was considered normal as it's just electrical currents.  I dunno if its okay on cards though.
