mini clear acrylic case
« on: July 04, 2007, 02:29:19 PM »

I recently got back into modding (been on a four year hiatus) and was inspired to build a clear case as small as possible and as cheap as possible but with some upgradble options and easy accessibility. After seeing some cases on line, none of them were really portable except for the CUBES! and that is still too big!!. So i started measuring plexi to see how small i could go and came up with V2.0

Clear case V2.0

height= 10.5"
width= 3.5"
length= 15"

This version was able to hold a MATX 9.6 x 9.6, full size psu and hdd
I even came up with a genius way of mounting the hdd on four 11/2" Mb Standoffs from a dead dell
but the hdd would be over the expansion slots (so no vidcard  :-?) and also it still too long!! :D.
This is where v2.1 was born!! :P

Clear case  V2.1

Height= 10.5"
width= 4.5'
length =13" approx (still trying to get it shorter)

This version can still hold a MATX 9.6 x 8,full size modified psu circiutboard, hdd and a vidcard either in slot a or b  :D. But so long to my so called innovative hdd mounting sys! :-?

I'm looking to place 120mm intake just over the hsf area,i will be removing the fan on my $2 hsf. 2 60mm led fans as outake at the top or 1 80mm and a 60mm, and also a 80mm intake.

I will update with pics as to component placement,renderings and my so called modified parts

Just finished with modifying the psu to make it fit. First i removed it from its casing and then went to work on getting rid of the fat :). First i got rid of all useles cables i didnt need, like the p4 6pin connector and two power leads. I just unsoldered them straight from the board. So all i'm left with is the atx connector, the p4 4pin connector amd one power with two heads.

Now i focused my attention to the plug, the 110/220 and power switch. I unsoldered the leads to the board and proceeded to lengthen them to about 15" to reach to the back of the case.

Will post pics of the finished psu tomorrow!!

:thumbsup:  Nice progress so far.  Don't electrocute yourself, I did twice when I had my PSU open.  (Though both times were for extremely stupid reasons)

Okay i just finished cutting the different pieces of plexiglas and did a quick mockup (using maskingtape to hold it together). Sorry about the low res pics (aka webcam) couldn't find my camera! :-? but will post better pics as soon as i find it :)

I was just about to cut the blowholes in the plexi when disaster struck! the dremel won't go below 30krpm
using the switch doesn't work its just stuck on 30k no matter what! :(.Guess i gotta bring it down to local repair shop to have it checked out!. What a bummer, guess this mod is on hold for a couple days. :cry:

P.S to Blafrisch thanx! but i still accidently shocked myself, i was just done testing the psu and was disconnecting the power and my finger touched one of the leads on the plug. WHAM ! 220v across my heart! and my bro just stood there laughing  :lol:. It hurt like a *explicit lyric*!

Okay since i can't do any cutting today, i'll turn my focus to joining the sheets of plexi together. Now i was planning on using metal L brackets i found at a local hardware store they're 1" x 1 1/2 " but now i'm not so sure.There about 1/2 mm thick but i'm still worried about them grounding the board :-?. I don't want to use silicone or exopy to hold the plexi together because that would defeat the purpose of having the panels easily removed and replaced in case of damage!. I also saw on some of the cheapo clear cases they use acrylic blocks to hold it together. Should i do something like that? i'm not sure :-?.

PLS if anyone has any ideas as to how to join the panels together i would appreciate it greatly!!

P.S here are some pics of the L Brackets i was talking about

I'm anxious to see the progress on this one.  I've been thinking about starting back into modding after a few years off, but only have time to move at this point.  I'm wanting to build my own case out of stainless, acrylic, and aluminum (all of which I have on hand) but have to come up with an original idea.  Anyway, keep it going, and good work so far.
