yeah, just have a medium powered transistor (TIP41C/42C?) to be triggered as a switch by the 555 to power a bunch of the LED groups each

I suppose you could but logic-level MOSFETs were really made for this kind of application.

What about a car battery that should have enough amps.

I dont know what a MOSFET is
