LCD Controllers (Don't hurt me)
« on: February 21, 2007, 07:50:02 AM »

So I'm looking to buy an LCD panel (8.4" SVGA) that is based on DSTN technology, not TFT.  Now if you have to look here like I did to figure out what DSTN was then you probably can't answer my question.  Will a controller for a TFT monitor work on a DSTN monitor?  I'm currently pending on responses from a couple LCD controller places including EarthLCD for an answer, but I figured I'd try polling the knowledge here too.

Usually controller boards are fairly model-specific; I'd be surprised if one designed for a given model that's TFT works with another which is DSTN... given the significant internal differences.

I'd also hold out for a TFT unless this has something really compelling-- you will notice the difference in image quality.

It's transflective; that = compelling for in the car.

It's also impossible to see in sunlight != compelling for in the car.

Do the even make DSTN screens anymore?  Last I heard of them was in the late 90s.  TFT has taken over...

I know DSTN has been phased out in favor of TFT now, but mainly because of the ability of TFT to reach higher resolutions.  A transflective wouldn't be impossible to read in sunlight... or am I misunderstanding what you wrote?

If I could find a single ACG-1024 I'd be set, but it doesn't look like anyone sells them individually or I'd be set.

It looks like you can order it from Digi-Key, at 133 USD a throw, minimum purchase one, but they don't keep it in stock.  I get the impression that means "we order it on demand", but it might be worth calling

I found a place willing to sell me one right now, but I don't know what the price is yet.  I have to call tomorrow during their business hours.  I have been told that this model is the one used to test the LCD I have so it should be compatible.

I hope I can get a nice picture in my car, my Lilliput in dash flip up screen is encountering some problems so I'm turning down this path (the motor that flips it up went bad).  Also it leads to some fun modding since an 8.4" LCD won't fit unless I make it fit.  I have ordered a replacement dash bezel too so I can fiberglass, bondo, and paint to my heart's content and still go back to stock easily if I want to.

I just found out the ACG-1024 contains lead too.  Mmm, lead
