Well, you would calculate the resistor by the equation (voltage drop)/current, but since the current is going to be changing, no one value of resistor is going to work.  If you must drop voltage, use diodes.

9 hours on trickle-charge. Regulator cool. Battery status started at 3 bars, still at 3 bars with no 100% indication symbol.
