Having problems with finding parts for the HDD VU meter.
« on: June 14, 2006, 04:44:11 PM »

Looking around for parts I cant seam to find the main chips localy. The ones that are shown in the diagram in the guides. The LM3914 and 4N25 aparently Radio Shack does not have these the other parts I can get. I was goint to make a prts list of there site and go buy but I cant find the chips. Know of any other electronic stores or sites.

Thanks, Now that I can find the parts is there a way to have different color leds on the VU meter without having to recaculate the resistors looking at 3 green, 3 yellow, 3 red, and 1 blue. Im not the best with working with electronics and even thinking about making the fan hud seams like a hard one for me. Local radioshack has the led but am i better of with buying the same kind from an online store, because ther color options or limited at the store looking for the clear one that show color only when lit.

he's probably talking about the limiting resistors for each LED used in the VU meter IC.  I believe the current coming out of the 3914 is already regulated.  This is done on pin 6 (there's a resistor wired there).

Also, don't you need an LM3916 to do the HDD VU meter circuit?

Both should work correctly.

I could not rename the thread I just reopened it.

Yes now I can finally start on the HDD VU meter. I have an idea on where I want it and how I want it. One question is it not supposed to be connected here?

that's like sticking a 9v battery on your tongue.

Translation:
No

Just for a short explanation why:
If you connected that you'd have the positive and negative directly connected to one another and your power supply would shut off immediately to protect itself.
