im thinking of hooking a psone lcd up for a carputer, but i want to know if i can power it off of 12v before i try it

I use a power inverter and just plug it in.  Though my car has an aux power connector that is only on when the car is on.

Well, speaking from personal experience there are 2 ways you can go.  First, use the car adapter made specifically for the psone lcd.  It's not 12 volts, (more like 9.5) so a regular converter wont work.  Second, get a 12v to 120v converter and use that with the wall wart that came with the lcd.
