I need a 2x7 Male-to-Female IDC Ribbon Cable
« on: March 02, 2006, 05:57:31 AM »

Does anyone know where I can find one?  I have found a few Female-to-Female cables, but can not find an adaptor to make it a Male-to-Female cable.

you chould probably just buy a new and and re-crimp it.

Seems to me like you want a typical 14-pin IDC.  I'd check www.digikey.com or www.jameco.com.
I've bought female ends from the latter before for things like that, but they should have both.

Here is a picture of what I need a cable for...

I found this at http://www.knjn.com/ShopLCDs.html ...

... but I need a gender changer to make it male-to-female.

Thank you for the links.

Unless I'm missing something, those stores seem to have 2x8 but not 2x7 pin connectors and cable pieces, and I don't see anything pre-assembled.  I have no idea how to make my own ribbon cable.  I tried Googling but kept finding stuff for installing things like hard drives.

Do you know where I can find out?  Maybe if I know how to make a cable I can give it a try using the 2x8 pieces at those sites.

i might have some 2x7 but i would have to confirm tonight.  I made one for error so if he can confirm before I do, hopefully he can post.  it's easy to assemble.  if it's 2x7, you would need a ribbon cable with 14 wires.  If you have an old IDE cable, count 14 wires then strip it off.  The connector would have numbers on them so if you want to mark your #1 cable, either use a red sharpie or any thing to mark it.  then align that side to the #1 side of the connector.

as for your gender issues (:D).  you can probably use a 2x7 grid of headers that has long pins on both sides.  Use an F-F ribbon cable then use the header strip to plug that on the female port on your pcb, and the other side to your F-F cable.

This looks like the best bet.  I can't find any assemblies with 14 pins that are male/female.

Yeah, you can use a 16-pin and over lap one side.  But I know I've seen 14-pin IDCs before.

If you want a male on one end, and a female on the other, this is what you want.
male
female

You'll also be needing some 28 gage wire (28awg).  Now this comes in strips similar to IDE.  But you can buy it in 20 wires connected.  So you'll just have to strip away the extra six.  The IDC ends are very easy to put on.  You just make sure you have the pin1 aligned wire1 (which you'll define) and crimp on the end.  Crimping with these doesn't require any special tools.  You simply press the one piece into the other and you'll splice the wire into the IDC.  I generally use a small pair of channel lock pliers   Repreat for the other side and you'll have a 1-1 male to female 14 pin cable.  Where you're going to into trouble is if you need something like an ethernet cable which requires some crossing of wires.  I'd be glad to make you a cable, but I don't have the ends or the cable anymore.  Last time I made one of these was to extend and modify some usb stuff.  PM me if you need a more detailed explination.  Maybe I'll just add it to the wiring guide here on GTF if it isn't already there.

Just so you also know, some of the IDC connectors on jameco are polarized and some aren't.  I'd stay away from the ones that are since I'm not sure how that effects the wiring.  As fas as I know, the polarized ones have the little tab on the one side of the IDC so it'll only go into the socket one way, but they might have something else different in the pin assignments I'm not aware of.  I haven't used the polarized ones before.

AFAIK, there's no difference in terms of wiring.  The nib/tab just makes sure it's plugged the right way.  Of course, you have to make sure you place your ribbon cable on the plug right, that is positioning wire #1 on the correct side of the connector.

Thank you everyone for your help.  I am going to give both suggestions a try.  I might need two of these cables anyway.

I want to try making my own ribbon cable (it will probably be fun and I want to see if I can do it without any problems).  But just incase I can't do it, I'll have the other cable to fall-back on.

I just want to check before I order, this wire is fine right?
