Buy some 360 ohm resistors and a 9 volt battery.  Connect a lead of the resistor to the positive lead of the battery.  Try connecting the other lead of the resistor and the negative lead of the battery to different pins on the display.  When a segment lights up, leave the negative lead of the battery connected to the pin it is currently connected to and move the resistor lead to a different pin.  If a different segment lights up, it is a common cathode display.  If no segments light up, it is a common anode display.  Play around with the display until you know which pins light up which segments.
