« on: February 02, 2006, 12:36:34 AM »

Hey i was wondering how i can overclock my geforce 6600GT AGP card?

i am a total n00b at OCing, so detailed help is appreciated.

Also, I was wondering how well the stock cooler on my p4 2.8ghz would be able to handle an oc to 3.0ghz

there is a new game coming out soon that i want to run well, and i cant aford an upgrade, so i want to tweak and OC to beable to play the game

The "Prescott" P4 is said to run hotter than the "Northwood" one. Might check that.

The 6600GT is a also bit hot-running... you might consider aftermarket cooling.  I <3 my Zalman VF700-Cu.

The nVidia control panel has a rudimentary overclocking control panel, run the speeds up slowly.  If the panel isn't shown (display properties->settings->advanced->Geforce 6600GT) check for 'coolbits', a registry tweak which shows the hidden panel.

coolbits (google search it) is the way to go for the Nvidia cards, especially for those new to the whole overclocking thing.  Its as easy as moving a slider bar.  IT even has an "auto overclock" that runs some quick tests to see how far the hardware can safely be pushed..  basically a 1 button overclock for you video card.  Best of all its aleady programmed into the drivers, all you have to do is unlock the option.

I somewhat doubt that you'd be able to overclock your 6600GT to the point that you'd be able to make a previously unplayable game playable, but I'm frequently wrong.  Rivatuner is a good utility to have, in addition to some benchmarking/stress testing software and the previously mentioned CoolBits reg hack.

Code: [Select]
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NvTweak]
"CoolBits"=dword:00000003
There's the the coolbits registry entry for you. It requires a reboot to unlock the OC-ing in the driver.

i have a 6600gt as well, and i was interested in a new cooler. the Zalman VF700-Cu seems to be the way to go, but i was wondering if it comes with grease, and if left unoverclocked, can it be run on silent mode with this card?

Most coolers come with thermal goo.  That one does (at least retail it does).

If left at stock speed, the silent mode should be no problem.

as i shed a single tear...
i shall not fear
for i can sleep tonight
my compyboxen is out of the darkness and into the light

lol that was bad i know.but yeah, i had to jerry rig a 2 way power splitter into a 3 way cuz i ran outa plugs, but it is awesome.  the ramsinks wouldnt fit on my card though, not a big deal however.
