Need some advice on soldering irons
« on: December 12, 2005, 06:40:52 PM »

Ok, I've been asked for some Christmas ideas, and could really use a new soldering iron.  I would love a new Weller soldering station, but I need to keep the price around $30.00 or so.  I would like to get some opinions on a good iron for a reasonable price.  Thanks!

A soldering station is pretty much overkill for modding work.  I really like Weller's 'professional series' irons.  Either go to their website to find a place to buy them near you or order from an online store like this one.

Thanks viridius, Those are the ones I was looking at.  There's an electronics store 15 min from my house that carry the pro series.

Man, if I had $1600 to blow and a bunch of micro-BGAs to solder, I'd probably buy that.

Can't you get lasers installed in your eyes for $1600?
I swear I heard about that on the radio... :undec:

for 1600 I would get the lasers even if they are just the lights.

I use a 15/30W one from Rat Shack. for most of my work.

The iron I have now is a 12 year old Shack 15w model.  It's been pretty good, but now takes a long a%& time to heat up.  I think I may go that rout again.  Thanks to all for your opinions.
