suddenly it becomes clear.  thanks again viridius.

if i have an input voltage that varies between 12v dc and say 15 dc, the circuit would just continue to operate like normal, right?  as in, it can deal with a varying input because it regulates it to 5.8 always..

The circuit should accomodate the changing input voltage.
