Modding a laptop power supply...
« on: May 03, 2004, 08:02:34 AM »

Not sure if this is where this post should be, but...

I have an extra laptop power supply/adapter, and I thought it would be kewl to use that as a supplementary power supply to power all of my light-mods in my case.  Does anyone have any experience with this? I know it's possible, but how would you mod it so you could run it into your case and hook up multiple molex connectors to it?

It is only possible assuming that your laptop power adapter outputs 12v DC.  Different laptops use different voltages, so you'll have to be careful.  Also, you'll have to watch the Amp draw, so that you don't exceed it.  The "brick" part of the adapter should list the output voltage, which part is + and which is -, and the maximum amperage load.

Okay, but...

Thanks balefire,
I'll look at the brick to make sure the amperes work out.
Still, do you know how to wire it? Do I just strip off the wires and add a cluster of Molex wires?
If that's all there is to it, let me know. If there's more to it than that, what is there to it?
Thanks!

Assuming that your Laptop inverter outputs 12v, (the ones I have are 18v and 20v) you are just going to wire up the molexes so that the 12v is the yellow wire.  You won't have a 5v rail, so you'll only be able to power 12v things.
