How hot can a 170w peltier get without burning up?
« on: May 20, 2004, 05:17:38 PM »

Ok, I just recieved my 170w peltier that I won on ****. Now I want to run this on a T-bird, which puts out ~80w of heat. That means I have to dissapate ~250w of heat, and I don't have this rig on water yet 'cause it's my back-up.

I'm wondering if I can run this on air using my current HSF. Right now that T-bird hits the 50c range under load when using an Aluminum Cooler Master HSF. It looks like one of the OEM HSFs that ship with the AXPs. Obviosly the HSF's going to get mighty hot if I triple it's heat load, but I don't care as long as I don't burn my CPU or Pelt and I get lower LOAD temps.

Do you think this is possible?

definitely get better cooling.  if you do try it, it might result in permanent damage to and/or your pelt and cpu.

e-bay is censored? WTF?

Ok, I won't use it on my T-bird until I WC it. Until then, I'll have it 5 volted on an OC'd 166mhz Cyrix MKII.

The only air 'sink that is capable of handling the load of a peltier is a Swiftech MCX-462+ with a super-fan on it.  I wouldn't even put it on the Cyrix.  Besides, you'll need a separate power supply to drive it.

It's working fine @5v on the Cyrix w/a stock AXP HS and a 50cfm 80mm fan. Yes, I do have a seperate PSU.

Just because it is rated for 170w doesn't mean it will actually put out 170w of heat. Good idea though, I wouldn't use it either until I had better cooling.
