You could try putting a large pull down resistor between the base and ground.  Maybe like 50K and make R3 be 5K or something like that.  That way, when you have no signal, the pull down resistor drops the base to ground but when you do have a signal, R3 and the pull down resistor act as a voltage divider.

I don't have the specs for the IR module handy, but is is actuve LOW? It sounds like it from your description of the LED being  the inverse of waht your remote is blinking. In that case, keep everything the same but use a PNP transistor instead of an NPN.

sorry to revive this, but linear, you were exactly right.  Thank you :)

new circuit:

The circuit works perfectly fine.  I actually just snagged a transistor from radio shack to get it to work.

Glad it's working now.  Any pics of the actual circuit?

I love it when a plan comes together.

har, believe it or not, on breadboard it worked fine, but soldered into place it's not working.  It's doing the same thing (LED stays lit the whole time) as it did before.  I'm sure it's probably placed incorrectly....but how sensitive to heat are transistors?  I'm hoping I didn't fry it when soldering it into place.

Here's the actual board layout I used:

Purple: voltage reg
orange: capacitor/diode
red: Resistors/IR module/LED
blue: PNP transistor (currently one of these )

Maybe someone can shed some light on a possible issue?  The IR detector circuit in itself works flawlessly, but the LED is constantly on.  I've tried two different pnp transistors and get the same result with each, which leads me to believe that for some reason or another it's in the board layout.  It seems fine to me, but I'm not even sure.

I gave up trying to append to the bord layout of what I had, So I have done the following..
Please can you tell me if this is right?

P.S
Light blue Holes are for risers so the bord sits on top, or below the other one... :P

Cheers
