12V PSU for battery charger
« on: March 05, 2004, 07:18:57 PM »

Alright heres the dilema, i got a friend who has a new charger and battery for his airsoft gun.

The battery is a 9.6V, 8-Cell NiCad battery,  1700mAh.
His charger is designed to charge NiCad and NiMh batteries, 7 or 8 cell.
I dont know much about batteries, but apparently theres a fast charge and a slow charge method and they need different amounts of power, if anyone can shed some light onto this that would be helpful, all i know is how to switch between the two.

The problem is his charger needs a 12VDC input. So, what should we use for the 12V input, we tried it off of his enermax PSU and it works great but he doesnt want to lug around an ATX power supply even though we got plenty of spares. I also have a feeling that your average 12V wall adapter doesnt supply enough current.

If anyone needs any more info, just ask, i'll be watching the thread :)

I know that you can buy those power supplies that only have 1 or 2 12 volt leads and nothing else. They are made for TEC's, if i can find a link i will edit it in.

Edit: Found It

i was thinking that too, but the ones for TECs are well above 20A and that is much more current than i need (even though i dont know exactly how much i need), they are also above 100$ if i recall.

Good idea nonetheless, bit overkill though :)

Ok well from a breif bit of research I found that rifles use batteries that are rated anywhere from 600-1500 mA (don't quote me on that), so you could just get one of these.

i saw a 2A one at a local radioshack the otehr day so we may as well end up getting one of those.

Out of curiousity, if it draws MORE than 2A, what is going to happen?

AC/DC converter. They make em in all ranges of volts and amps. IINM, they cost anywhere between $5 to $20, depending on what DC/I you need.

would anyone know how to figure out how many mA/A i need the adapter to be?

From what i understand, dependign on how fast i set the battery to charge it charges with different power requierments.

Theres a knob on the charger that says current, and it has a low and a high switch, the high switch lets it go from 500mA to 5A and the low goes from 50mA to 500mA

Here are pictures/links

please excuse my n00bishness, i dont know much about this stuff
