Nice article, but check this 1st.
You can check your mobo manual to see if you have a CIR/IR header pins,
if you do you can make a $1.50 worth receiver.
I have the gigabyte GA-7NNXP, in the manual it says
* 1 IrDA connector for IR/CIR.
I went to RadioShack and got one of those 5V RX receiver for $3. But you can get cheaper and better ones online, check the WinLirc list ).
Find one of those CDROM digital audio cables swap the pins to match the headers pins.
