I'm just wondering if this is compatible with the IRdA header on newer mobos? Like can you use a similar module and connect it to the header, and run the same software to control your comp with it?

I've read about IRdA and most of the time it only involves devices such as cellphones, pda's and such.  I believe they use a different kind of IR frequency, not like what regular remotes use.

x24's right.  irDa uses a way different frequency range than your average remote (~38kHz), although there is a very minute chance that it will actually work.

I think this is important and should be added to the guide.

"The line drivers inside notebooks often provide voltages about 6V or even less. So you should make sure that your serial port delivers at least 8V of output voltage. If your serial port provides less you can also try using a low-drop voltage regulator (e.g. LP 2950 CZ) instead of the regulator suggested here. Low-drop types need much less voltage offset for reliable regulation."

Nice article, but check this 1st.
You can check your mobo manual to see if you have a CIR/IR header  pins,
if you do you can make a  $1.50 worth receiver.  

I have the gigabyte GA-7NNXP, in the manual it says
* 1 IrDA connector for IR/CIR.


I went to RadioShack and got one of those 5V RX receiver for $3. But you can get cheaper and better ones online, check the WinLirc list ).
 Find one of those CDROM digital audio cables swap the pins to match the headers pins.

I would suggest anyone doing this mod and using it via girder to use the IGOR plugin instead of the winLIRC server + winLIRC plugin combination.

the winLIRC server hangs a lot and is really not efficient, while the IGORPLUG plugin handles the winLIRC very good, wihtout the need of the winLirc driver/server
