Nice work gideonx but i dont understand your circuit.
Im dont know much on electronics but what do you use that capacitor for in a DC circuit?
A potentiometer(with the right resistance, id say 250ohm) in serial with the fan isnt enough for the control of the fan? you wouldnt need no switch then.
What does that LM317 do?

Ps: how do you attach a picture anyway?

2. What is it that you don't understand?
3. The capacitors were used to smooth the signal.
4. All the parts are available anywhere in the world.
5. The switch is only needed if you want to go up to 12V
6. LM317 is a voltage regulator.
7. Use the [img] tags and put between them the link to your image.

Would it be possible to connect components such as resistors, LM317's and LED's on a Proto board without the use of exposed wires - perhaps by means of special soldering?  If so, how might I go about building such a circuit?

Yes you can, but you would have to build your own PCB, design it, etch it and drill.

That's a MOSFET (think of it as a souped up transistor).  Even thought they might look the same, they are completely different.
