seems a bit too expensive, even if it is 1394. for the price i could probably get a 10k rpm scsi drive that's bigger and toss it in one of the spare hotswaps i've got laying around for the same effect...

I have been looking to make something like this. So far I have not checked their price but the best I cam up with was right around $220-240 after buying the parts. A 40gig laptop hdd and a nice usb2.0 small case that draws power off the usb port so I don't have to carry around a power cord.

I did not see refrence in your review Gid, does that one *require* the power to be used? I see the plug on one of the pics.

Oof, just saw the price. Man are they nuts? Weird thing is you can buy just the case for $100 then goto newegg or where ever and buy a 40gig laptop hdd and have the same thing for $100 less then whay they are selling the 40gig for.

I am going that route, think I'll buy just the case today, since the review Gid gave showed good throughput.

Maybe the firewire connection was their basis for the high price.

Well they case they sell has both the firewire and usb 2.0, just missing the hdd. I ordered it today, will see how it works when it shows up (3-day fedex, 3 days my butt)

Well that sux. About how big is the transformer and how much does it weight? Kind of a mute point since I ordered the $99 case from them already

Got the case today finally. Pretty sharp. Snarfed the 4gig hdd out of my old laptop and slaped it in, I am working on getting a 40giger. Worked 1st try with no problems. In my opinion the light is not that hard to see, and if you want to replace it it would be a easy swap. The front is just some tinted plastic, could replace that with transparent blue also.

BTW, on my system the USB works w/o needing the power. Tonorrow at work I will find out if the firewire requires the ac.
