you're right, that looks really cool! but what an ordeal!

they have this paint that my dad puts on his handgun sights (he's a competition pistol shooter).  it's like phospheresent (spelling?) or something and it really stands out. (almost looks like it glows)
maybe two drops of that on a fan... wouldn't be as bright but might be bright enough.

again, really cool idea! don't get me wrong... just more work than i'm willing to do. :)

It isn't much work tho, but i would recommend trying it out on an old fan first :) also use the carbon-brushes for putting the power on the washers, doesn't makes so much noise.

Made one with the leds and to compare one with glow-paint, the led-one looks way better in both daylight and dark.

Going to try to make it blink and stuff, shouldn't be so difficult :)

Would the leds on the fan be out of balance? or decrease the rpm? Also I was wondering if it would disrupt the flow some.  Maybe a phospherescent dot and some black light might be a better option.

I was thinking about how to make this easier, anyone tried to take apart one of those yo-yos that has the lights in it? Maybe just find the balance point and hot glue those to the center of the fan. That way when the fan spins the lights are on. Those do have their own power source and I am not sure how long that would last.

how about just hookin' em up to a watch (lithium) battery, and changing the battery every once and awhile..... they have enough juice, right?
