you can try this:

knight rider chaser circuit

Just search for "chaser light"  or knight rider style.  but anyway, that circuit has very typical components, like the 555 timer, resistors and LEDs, which can be bought in radio shack.  I'm not sure about the 4017 IC though.  they might have it, depending on the radio shack in your area.

If your RadioShack doesn't have a 4017, something is terribly, horribly wrong.

This is really nice..  I like that its so small and doesnt have wires all over it. Dont like that its in the UK and costs $40 plus shipping.

Check out the pictures for a good look. Anyone seen a how to for something like this? it's very clean. No wires to hide..  can put it anywhere. Just need holes for the LEDs.

Get a PCB, the UV or the one that is used with a marker and design the PCB as you wish.
