Molex Connector mod for HD. Quick question.
« on: September 12, 2003, 05:13:44 PM »

I saw the molex connector led mod at metku.net and I want to put it at the molex connector at the hard drive.  Theres a 12v and 5b wires going to the hard drive.Which one do I remove to add a led?  Does it need both 12 and 5 volts?

You don't remove anything.  In the mod, Japala used 3.5v LEDs, so he had to use a resistor.  Somewhere in the article also says that if you use a 5V LED, then you don't need to use a resistor.  Just use the LED and cross the red and black wire in your molex.  Just make sure you don't cross it anywhere else.  Use hot glue to make sure of that.

You might not want to do this.  LEDs get less resistive as they get warm.  This causes a problem.  When an LED gets warm, it has less resistance, therefore it gets even warmer and has even less resistance.  Rinse. Lather. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.  It's called "thermal runaway".

The resistors not only reduce the voltage, they get more resistive as they get warmer counter-balancing this effect.

Ok i just want to add a LED to my HD molex.  Do i put the LED in the middle of the molex connected to red and black?  Im using 5mm 4000mcd LEDs.

you still didn't give us the voltage and forward current of the led. you need those to calculate the ohm resistor you need.

techmodder you can use anything, 12V, 7V, 5V, all you have to do is to calculate which resistor you have to use toghether with the led.
There are several led's resistor calculators out there.
It's always better to use a resistor toghether with a led, no matter if the led is 3V and you're giving 3V, use a small resistor.

I would say you need to read it again. I have read it and it gives out good instructions on how to do this.

On a side note. I would see if you can come up with a smaller LED. 5mm is a large one and is going to be hard to fit into the molex.

Your gonna have to file the 5mm LEDs down, and use a 100ohm resitor for 3.5volts. (brown black brown gold i think) (somebody please confirm). You have to remove the pins to pull out the interior plastic dividers to fit the led in.  And it takes for ever (i did it to all of them).  Have fun!

1. Molex is Red(5V), Black(Ground), Black(Ground), Yellow(12V).

2. He can use any voltage, all he has to do is to calculate which resistor to use, he doesn't even have to calculate it since there are several LED's resistor calculators online.

3. Removing the pins is an easy thing to do, just get a small screwdriver and bent the little thingies that secure the pin inside the nylon connector.

4. Removing the pins only takes 1 minute.
