And you're correct. Twisted Mods has a pair of nice monitor mod articles, one of which (http://www.twistedmods.com/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=213&page=4">HERE) mentions exactly that - fans causing EM interference  with a monitor. I wanted to mount the fans internally, but it looks like external will have to do. That should leave enough space and shielding between them and the monitor's guts yet still remain effective.

I put a .25amp 80mm fan in my monitor and I havent experienced any ill effects.
