120mm Fan noise killer homemade?
« on: August 14, 2003, 06:27:34 PM »

Are there any ways to reduce the noise of a 120mm fan? I know Antec makes noise killer but I don't feel like buying it and paying 15 bucks for something that I could prob make.
Are there any mods that show you have to make one or something?

well, you can reduce the noise by lowering the voltage going to it by putting a resistor on the power wires. or you could try putting rubber washers between the fan and the case.

it is going to be mounted to a radiator. I think I will try the rubber washers.

you can 7v it too, ground the black wire to the 5v line... uhm, black wire from fan to red(?) wire from PSU.

Also, rubber gromets, doesn't hurt performance, does kill a few dB.

edit: just saw the radiator comment, I've got my 120 grommetted to the case, don't need to do it to the radiator though.

omg...don't ground 5v line...I don't think that's what he was trying to say...but... 7v you get from running the fan off the yellow and red wires, instead of the yellow and black, or red and black...

I think all the LED fans (120mm) were like, 60-70cfm that I've seen

he was saying put the ground line off of the fan to the 5v line, cause if you reverse it, you get 17 volts. :)

i found a site, http:// http://www.allelectronics.com/ that has 120 mm fans with an output of 130 cfm @ 3500rpm. the only draw back is that its loud, 49 Dba loud. but 1 of those would be about the same as two fans.
