HELP! ps2 keyboard to USB using cat 5 cable
« on: August 12, 2003, 12:00:49 AM »

Would anyone be able to tell me how i could change a ps2 keyboard to usb? A small diagram would be nice :)  I wanted to have a secondary keyboard over by my bed so i can play games while laying down. I wanted to use some extra cat 5 cable to run it all the way over there and switch the plug to usb since i dont have an extra ps2 plug. Would this be possible? Thanx in advanced.

*waits patiently for LordZuul01*

You'd need some way to convert PS/2 to USB.  It's not a simple cable swap, I can tell you that much.  You'd probably have to get some hard core ICs and in the end, you'd probably be better off getting a whole new keyboard.  I mean, if you're up to the challenge, fine, but if you just want to use the keyboard from your bed, it's a lot more trouble than it's worth.

Do they work backwards?  I had completely forgotten about them.

Changing USB to PS/2 is easy and inexpensive.  Changing PS/2 to USB is difficult, expensive, and rarely worth it.  For what you will spend on the converter, you could just buy a USB keyboard.
