[slightly off topic]
Your thread just gave me an idea.  Wouldn't it be possible to use a bolt on hsf and run the bolts through the mobo to the mobo tray?  You'd have to be extremely careful to make sure it's aligned correctly, and not putting too much pressure on the mobo but enough on the cpu. With something like that even having a heavy heatsink with a 60/80-120mm adapter and fan wouldn't be a problem.

or have I been sniffing the thermal compound too much?

Hmm, I think that could be done, with care.

You could put a set of intermediate nuts to distribute the pressure evenly, figure it out and, once set up, glued in place so they wouldn't move.

It'd sure be work changing a CPU, though, once you got it set up!

40 bucks....hmm. Nope not worth. The idea of overclocking is to save money not waste it. Still a cool find though.
