If you are using USB, could you not just use the 5v from the usb and power a few leds?

hmmm ye i would just run one long wire form the converter down the same wire as teh keyboard to your comp.

Why not mod an old 8 wire LAN cable? 2 for power, and 6 for keyboard (allowing both PS/2 and USB styles). You can use a custom connector and drill a hole, or have two wires with stock connectors join somewhere behind your case. Just have the single cable go into your keyboard and reconnect the data lines.
