i maybe missing the whole thing, but is this used as a raid utlility? or is it for quickrelease harddrives and swopping? i'm probably sleeping too much, hehe

here's a better answer:

For some applications, RAID ready "drive module" backplanes can be used (instead of daisy-chaining multiple drive trays) to reduce impedance, maximize available space, or as a solution to BUS length issues. The 'ISwap' backplane is the latest drive module with cooling designs that specifically address over-heat issues produced by today's ever-growing hard drive technology.

it's a removable tray, but they call it a backplane, comes with RAID support if you have it.

there were 3 drives in that machine. 1 Main drive not in the Backplane and 2 40 gig ata 133 Maxtor drives in the backplane.
