The idea was sparked by http://forums.gideontech.com/viewtopic.php?p=136245#136245">Loki Xtra's post about how he was building some computers to donate to a foster home. I liked it, so I gave GideonX a shout and he has agreed to participate in our own little charity work. Basically this is how it works: We'll come up with a checklist of everything that will be needed, and you all say what ya got, and as more and more people add to the list, it'll be updated here. Once we have atleast enough for 1 full computer, we'll ask everyone to send their stuff to GideonX (he'll post his address and stuff later). He'll put it together, test it, and all that good stuff. The exact place we'll be donating this computer isn't etched in stone yet, but we'll not be giving it to some "Donate a computer for the kids!" place.. not that they are evil, we just want to make sure it gets to the kids. It will also be a local place (to GideonX), since shipping a full computer across the country is stupid, and costly, when we know there are places near him. If this works out well, we'll possibly elect someone different to do the next computer, or stick with GideonX. Even though I'm sure the kids that get it will be happy with anything, I'd like to see them get atleast a 200mhz rig. A check list will follow this post.

Checklist:
-Case
-PSU
-Floppy drive
^ mad_scientist, damaged
-CPU (atleast 200mhz please)
-motherboard (compatible with CPU we get- most likely a pentium)
-Memory
-Sound card (if mobo doesn't have integrated)
-Video card (if mobo doesn't have integrated)
-Keyboard
^ mad_scientist, damaged
-Mouse
^ mad_scientist,
-Monitor

-Cables, and ribbons for the hardware (cd audio, IDE.. etc)

--Extra--
-Modem
-Network card
-Speakers
-CDrom
-Addon Cards
-Mod supplies :)
(We aren't talking about your good rheobus, or 12in CCFLs, make it little. A couple super bright LEDs for light, a couple extra fans for noise, toggle switch to control the leds, and a window to see the lights would make a cheap, but damn good mod for this project.)

This is a good idea.  after we get the one for GideonX, we can have other people from other places as other spots to build a PC for a charity in that particular area.  like one would be built in the west coast area, on somewhere south or something like that.  since we have a lot of people here and most of us have useful junk, i know we can come up with two or more systems.  Very nice.  I'll be checking my stuff for useful ones.

Awesome idea, I'll have to see what I have around. I think I might have a monitor with a big hole in it...but it works :)

I'll send three ADDA 80mm fans (from a Lian-Li, quiet) and some IDE cables (IDE and/or ATA).

Count me in!
i can throw in a decent old school AGP card that doesn't require drivers. We had it in my friends computer and he played CS and EQ fine on it.

I'll update at the end of the night, I won't add people for having certain things until we know we can use them. Like spex's video card, we might get a mobo with only PCI.. etc etc.

I have a bunch of stuff that I could donate but I don't have the extra money for shipping at the moment :(  Sorry guys.  I will though volenteer to do our "west coast" donation in the future.  I know of a couple of good places a PC could be of use around here.
