| AT PSU? Do they need the fans? |
« on: April 02, 2003, 07:52:01 AM »

Hi there I have a Old AT power supply and I was going to use it to power the CCFL\NEON\ K\b Lights for my pc but it will be out side under desk but the FAN is making a hell of alot of noise. But there is no hot air comming from it.
So Do they realy need the fans?
If so why?

I will replace the fan if I have to but I was just wondering......

Cheers

If your gonna take the fans out I would just put it in a open area and make the vents on the cover bigger. But it would probably be better to replace the fan.

Not to sure, I would think that you should keep some airflow in there, as it might cook.

When we made our 36v peak-to-peak PSU's in my first year, those transistors got mighty hot, and they weren't very 'powerful' PSU's.

yes, you do need a fan in an AT PSU. My old 166 has a 300watt AT PSU in it, when the fan seized, the temps often went to 70-80*C and the case itself started to heat. Replaced the fan, hear no noise and PSU kept rather cool.

Replace the fan with a new one, all should be well :)

Yes all powersupplies, regardless of form factor, need a fan.

Some desktop computers at college don't have any fans except the one on the CPU heatsink. Not even in the PSU. Sure has to be hot in there.

I put in a Silent fan I had and its not the FAN its the PSU its making noises!
Is that ok?
I allways thought it was the fan that made the noise.

Please help me with this?
Is the psu alone supose to make a noise?
