60mm --> 80mm or 80mm -->120mm
« on: March 14, 2003, 07:36:49 PM »

Hey,
I want to decrease the sound of my fan on my heatsink for my CPU and increase its airflow as well.  I've looked at the 60mm to 80mm fan adapters and was wondering if I should also buy an 80mm  to 120mm adapter to even get less sound and more airflow.  I'd like some advice on if 2 adapters is dumb/pointless or if it would satisfy my wants perfectly.  Thanks a lot,
Steve

in theory, it will work, but do you have enough room in your case?

Also I think that would put alot of tension on the CPU/mounting mechanism

I just measured it all out with the figures that I have for the 2 adapters I've found and the fan i was planning on buying and it will fit fine but I think you have a good point on the stress on the CPU/mounting mechanism.  I think it should hold up fine while its just sittin in my house but I think I should be able to easily take off the fan or adapters all together to move it for LAN's and such.
thanks again

Too Much Tension?!?!?!?! I had a Tornado Fan, Volcano 6Cu Heatsink, and a 60mm to 80 mm adapter all hanging off 1 lug on each side. But about the Noise, try not to go nuts with the fan, because the adapter really constricts airflow, and you get that really annoying little Whistle. Just my 2 cents....

you could use some kinda bracket screwed into the top of your case and then screwed between the 120mm fan and the fan grill to support all that weight.
