making ur own eject buttons for CD ROM drives
« on: March 08, 2003, 11:29:11 PM »

I want the front bezel of my case to have as many switches and knobs as the inside of an airplane cockpit.  If I could wire up my CD ROM drive buttons to 3rd party switches, it would allow for more switches on the front bezel, and would be a cool way to open stealthed drives.  I imagine that pressing the button on a CDROM drive closes a circuit, and causes the drive to open.  The main thing I need to know is how to make a toggle switch work with a momentary button.  (I would prefer an on/off switch as opposed to a button that you push and release).  Everything else I will only find out once I open the case.
  Also, if you can think of anything else that I could use switches or knobs for (besides fan speed, lights on/off, power, restart) post it here.

"toggle switch work with a momentary button"
I don't get it.

There are momentary toggle switches. I had one in my 72 Charger for the headlight covers.

so let me get this straight. for the buttons, your going to use an on/off toggle. so instead of hitting the eject momentary on the drive, your going to have to flip the switch on, then back off quickly. is that correct?

if(statement==true);
just desolder the lil pushbutton switch on the drive, solder some leads to it, route them to your switch, kapowie. you have your switch.
else
please clarify.

I know momentary toggle switch exists. There are a couple on an old wheel alignment machine at my dad's garage that I plan to hack out eventually, since these are hard to find and often expensive.

Or you could always try http://www.google.com/search?q=momentary+toggle+switch&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&meta=" target="_blank">Google.

What I mean is that the buttons on CDROM drives are pushed for an instant and then released (momentary) while a toggle switch is flipped on and stays on until flipped off.

I'll try experimenting with an old CDROM drive.  This should be a pretty easy mod.
